  9.  AB    OBJECTIVES: The research project was aimed at securing a profile of a
  10.        group of seafarers who has the potential to become peer counselors and
  11.        educators. From the profile a culturally relevant intervention program
  12.        was conducted to equip these seafarers with basic information on
  13.        STD/HIV/AIDS as well as counseling and pedagogic techniques. METHODS:
  14.        Environment sensing, Focusused Group Discussions (FGDs) and in-depth
  15.        interviews with key informants and communicators, Knowledge, Attitudes
  16.        and Perceptions (KAP) Survey, seminar-workshops and programmed
  17.        self-instructional modules (distance education). The seamen who were
  18.        involved in the project were chosen on the basis of their willingness to
  19.        participate in the project. RESULTS: Seamen in general belong to a group
  20.        practising high-risk behaviour vis-a-vis HIV infection. The dynamic
  21.        interaction among the nature of their work environment, their sexual
  22.        beliefs and practices and certain cultural factors determine this
  23.        condition. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The project results have revealed
  24.        that there are a lot of opportunities to conduct education work on
  25.        AIDS/STDs among seamen while on board the ship. Collectively, they
  26.        engage in socialization activities during their free hours which can be
  27.        maximized by trained peer educators on AIDS who could impart their
  28.        knowledge on STD/AIDS/HIV and self-protection while at sea. Also, the
  29.        strategy of distance education can be utilized for the continuing
  30.        education of seafarers as classroom setting is not feasible due to the
  31.        nature of their job's workplace.
